If you're looking for a longer beginner hike in Canterbury, I highly suggest getting out on the Bealey Spur track. This track is just before Arthurs Pass National Park and has a mix of beech forest, open track and the option for summit views. Unlike many of the tracks in Arthurs Pass, Bealey Spur track is much more gradual as it climbs along the Black Range near Mt Bruce with a few but not many steep sections.
