If there is one place you should stay in Hokitika by far it should be Woodland Glen Lodge. I drove out to Hokitika for the weekend so I could explore the area a little more and to be honest one of the highlights was actually where I was staying!
Nestled just out of town is Woodland Glen Lodge. A peaceful, homey and serene bed and breakfast. With views of the Southern Alps and countryside, I don’t know if it’s possible to stay and not relax.
Laurie and Janette Anderson are the owners of this cozy B&B. They’ve put a lot of work and love into the lodge making everyone feel more than welcome for their stay. They were really friendly showing me around, recommending some places to eat but also chatting about travels and experiences. Janette was originally from Scotland and like me made the move to New Zealand. We, of course, had lots to talk about!
The Lodge
The lodge itself is not modern per say in the way of decor but it works so perfectly. Janette is a crafter and you can see her work throughout the lodge hung over chairs. I love all the rimu throughout the lodge and the artwork on the walls. It all just comes together so nicely making it feel like a home away from home.
When the weather’s nice there’s plenty of room to sit outside on the patio. Especially for the stunning sunsets that Hokitika gets. If it’s rainy which Hokitika also gets a lot there is plenty of space to relax inside.
The room
The lodge has five rooms. Suited to families, singles, couples, there’s a room for everyone. I was very lucky to stay in the beautiful Moreaki suite for the night. The room is secluded in the west wing of the lodge with a conservatory just before the room giving the most privacy. I just loved everything about this room. It is an octagonal room with windows all around. The natural light peers through the windows lighting it up during the day. Patio doors open on both sides bringing in the beautiful sound of nature. The furniture is made from recylced Remu and I had the bed of my dreams, a 4 poster queen bed. There was also a large private ensuite and a 300 degree view of the garden. This room was simply stunning. It’s easy to say that I just didn’t want to leave!
Breakfast
Breakfast was wonderful. Lots of choice! Laurie and Janette had everything waiting and ready. It all just felt so homey which is a feeling I absolutely love being so far away from my family.
I stayed in a B&B years ago with my mom back in the day competing at horse shows and it was just the most wonderful experience. Although I was on the other side of the world staying at Woodland Glen Lodge brought back those memories I cherish. If you haven’t got the feeling already, I just love this lodge and if you’re staying in the area do yourself a favour and check in. I found Hokitika, in general, is one of those places you can explore and just be so relaxed and the lodge really tops the cake. I can’t wait to go back! Book your next stay here!
Thank you so much to Laurie and Janette at Woodland Glen Lodge for such a wonderful stay. I look forward to my next stay!
