Ok so I’m not out climbing Everest or anything but for this girl who grew up on flatter than flat prairie land I can honestly say sometimes it almost feels like it!

Ahh feel the burn!

I know you’re laughing at me. I’m laughing at me too.  One day I’ll get used to the ‘steep’ grades or what I consider to be steep.  I’m slowly working my way up… literally.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time hiking since I’ve been here in the South Island. One hike/walk a weekend. I hate the gym and I love chocolate. I don’t like weights but I like amazing views so my alternative left is to hike. And really,  I’m ok with that.

I’m on a mission to find some of the best hikes and walks in New Zealand. I’ve mostly stayed in the Canterbury region. Here are some great views I’ve got so far!

  1. Mount Roy
This was the climb of all climbs for me so far! Easy track as in its basically like a road but over 1500 meter high, it isssss steep!  Worth every aching muscle for the views above!

    Mount Roy, Wanaka, New Zealand
  2. Mt. Grey/Maukatere
One I’ve hiked a few times, it definitely gives you a good workout!  With the morning fog sticking around I felt like I was in the jungle!

    Mt Grey, Amberley, New Zealand
  3. Mount Alford
A very deceiving hike for me.  It started off quite flat which was only there to ease into the good climb of 1170 meters.

    Mt. Alford, Methven, New Zealand
  4. Rob Roy Glacier
I had no idea what to expect at the top of this climb but I absolutely loved. A bunch of little water falls, snow, I just loved this view!

  5. Mount Richardson
There is a track on this mountain called Blowhard track.  It lives up to its name.  I was totally puffing getting to the top, but we made it!  I wasn’t able to grab the best picture but you get a great view of the Puketeraki mountain Range. I’ll have to go up next time with a better camera!

Have you been on any of these hikes? What did you think? Any suggestions for my next one?

  1. Hi Lauren,Next time you`re up Mt Alford, the last section through the scrub before the summit ridge should be easier;two of us from the Mt. Somers Walkway put several waratahs/orange sleeves in place to define the track better. We`ve also attempted to keep the water off the track just up from the man`gate where you exit the bush. The problem is the cattle, who divert the water & it`s on farmland so we have little influence.Keep up the writing,I`m sure people will be inspired to try these hikes.
    Cheers,Lew
