Story time: Exploring the magic of Tasman Lake
“Proceed with caution”, “Enter at your own risk”, “Avalanche area”
Being from the prairies these are all things Lauren doesn’t exactly get excited about, but they had a 4WD ute, Chris’s confidence and his need to drive off the beaten path.
So, on they went. Neither one had been to Tasman Lake before. They weren’t totally sure at that point that they were even driving in the right direction to actually see the lake. They found out later that they, in fact, were, just a little detour from most of everyone else and were in for a real surprise with the views they were about to see.
After navigating some very rocky and bumpy terrain they came to a spot that looked like a turnaround area. There was a worn path up the side of what actually just looked like a wall of rocks. Of course, they stopped and decided to go up.
The view from where they were was already simply stunning. Mountains with snow-capped peaks, dense bush and large rocky screes towered beside them. They both felt as if they just stepped into something that you’d only see in movies. Little did they know what was waiting for them.
The path took about a minute to get up. Standing at the top, Lauren and Chris were left stunned and speechless. They both took a minute just processing what they were seeing.
‘Is that.. is that a boat down there?’ ‘No no cant be. It’s too small’ ‘Oh my gosh that’s, that’s a glacier?! It’s so big. And that over there, an iceberg? Whatt?!! Is that ice cracking, it sounds like thunder’
‘Is this real life?’
Both Chris and Lauren have been so privileged to explore many areas in New Zealand, they have seen the amazing landscape in Canada and stood at the forefront of the Grand Canyon. All experiences giving a different feeling and provoking different thoughts.
This experience, looking down at Tasman Lake with the Tasman Glacier right there and registering the sheer size of it all is something the two will never forget and left them with a little more wow than they had ever seen before.
They stayed to watch the sun go down and smiled knowing these memories of that day will remain in their hearts forever.
