Your guide to hiking Roy's Peak in Wanaka, New Zealand.
Ok so I'm not out climbing Everest or anything but for this girl who grew up on flatter than flat prairie land I can honestly say sometimes it almost feels like it! Ahh feel the burn! I know you're laughing at me. I'm laughing at me too. One day I'll get used to the 'steep' grades or what I consider to be steep. I'm slowly working my way up... literally. I’ve spent quite a bit of time hiking since I’ve been here in the South Island. One hike/walk a weekend. I hate the gym and I love chocolate. I don’t like weights but I like amazing views so my alter[...]
New Zealand has this super cool place (among many) called Queenstown. It’s FULL of people from EVERYWHERE. I say that without any exaggeration. It’s a fun, self-proclaimed adventure capital of the world. They even have their own website. Chris and I spent one night in Queenstown. We got there in the late afternoon on a Sunday and were gone by 10 am the next day. It was quick… We did manage to get some touristy things in which I have to say I was kind of dying to do. I really haven’t been a tourist before. I’m a prairie girl… I’ve been out of th[...]
They’re dreamy. They’re funny and even if you have no idea what is being said, they’re sexy. Yup, that’s right. I am talking about Kiwi accents. Lets be honest, I'm talking about the way the MEN sound. Mmm. . . he he I think I can speak in confidence that I am not alone in my oh la la la keep talking paleasseee thoughts. They just sound so damn good even when I have no idea what they’re saying! I don’t know, maybe it’s a Canadian thing! The other thing I love about the way Kiwis talk is what they say! I got a little taste for[...]
10 things kiwis rock at! I have just come home from NZ for another summer break in Canada. I’ve been home only a few days and completely and totally miss the country! Aetoroa, you have my heart. Leaving your home and exploring a new one really lets you see things differently, appreciate your own country and also make you think, wow they’re actually doing it right! Yes NZ roads are the worst, along with their internet connection but I could still go on and on about how amazing and totally awesome New Zealand is. Why you might ask, well here’s a fe[...]
So I pretty much grew up at the lake. From the time I was about 13 my family was at the lake every single weekend. Dad spent a good portion of his childhood at Falcon Lake in the Whiteshell in Manitoba. His parents owed a lake front cottage and he spent most of his time on the lake, sailing, boating and fishing. Unfortunately the cottage had to be sold and it was years later until he went back. Fortunately though for me, mom and dad decided to go back. Although I was opposed at first with this taking off every weekend business because[...]
22 days… I just got to New Zealand on December 12th and in 22 days I’m heading back to Canada. I spent 4 months crying because I miss home and now I’m spending a month crying because I have to go back. What the hell right. My traveling isn’t the backpacking hop to a new country every 6 weeks type of travel. I feel like it’s a different kind of a travel. A living travel. I’ve come to New Zealand to live like I did in Canada but New Zealand style. I have a job here, I have rent payments, a car and use weekends and any time I can get off to explore this[...]
A couple of weeks ago at least now, Chris decided to buy a new rally car.. in Nelson. So naturally my first thought hands down, was roaaddd trip! And that’s what we did. The trip was unlike any trip I’ve taken yet. I can’t think of a better way of seeing NZ than to just hop in a car and drive. We started our trip for the sunshine city early on a Friday morning. Made a stop at Chris’ parents in Rangiora and took off from there. Seven and a halfish hours later (made some stops on the way) we were at the top of the south island. Kind of blew my mind consi[...]

I’ve officially been in NZ for 3 months! It’s been a whirlwind of emotions mixed with amazing views and great adventures! I’m constantly day dreaming of what I want to see next, where I want to go and try to completely deter the thoughts of.. how am I going to pay for all this! But in true Lauren fashion, ‘where there is a will, there’s a way’. Time is going by very fast here but in the past three months I have had learned a lot! Let me share with you a few things I’ve learned along the way so far… 13 things I’ve learned in 3 months about New Ze[...]
